When looking at installing solar PV systems, battery storage or other forms of on-site energy , obtaining ‘grid’ consent is required.
RI Cruden are experts in navigating this process, with over 15 year’s experience in the solar industry along with our continued work with Solar Energy UK working groups, we are best placed to guide our customers through this journey. This blog stresses the importance of choosing the right partner to ensure compliance and successful project delivery.
Grid consent is commonly called a G99 application, though there are various options for connecting dependent on type and size of solar and storage install.
These are detailed below:
- G98: Connect and Notify – As the term suggests, you can install and notify the DNO after completion. Up to a maximum of 16A or 3.68kW per phase. Typically used for standard domestic solar PV system or domestic hybrid solar and battery systems or a small commercial roof top system.
- G99: Apply to Connect – For projects greater than 16A or 3.68kW per phase. Typically used for Solar PV for businesses or larger domestic solar and battery.
- G99 Fast Track: Apply to connect – Solar and battery only. This is a quicker application process but the solar and battery must match certain criteria. Only available for connections 7kW or less. Fastrack required an electrician to carry out some testing as part of the application to speed up the process. The time is stated at 10 working days however in reality it is nearer 20 working days. RI Cruden can provide this service for a fee depending on location.
- G100: Export limitation. This limits the amount of Solar energy which goes back to the grid and can reduce connection costs.
‘Grid’ is a term that is often used to encompass several organisations that operate the electricity network. One of the key stakeholders for domestic and commercial rooftop scale solar and battery installs is the Distribution Network Operator (DNO). In the Highland region where RI Cruden are based the DNO is SSEN.
There are several DNO’s that operate across the UK, divided into regions as per the below graphic. All of which do follow similar guidance and general rules. However, in this rapidly changing landscape there are also considerable discrepancies between DNO’s. In particular, there are areas of Scotland where connecting commercial solar and storage projects have greater success than others.

RI Cruden are experts at navigating this space. Our team has extensive experience of submitting grid applications, liaising with DNO’s over their offers, and presenting the results and options to the customer following a response from the DNO. Our team are currently engaged in Scotland and UK wide solar energy grid forums which include DNOs, national governments and key industry stakeholders.
Beware of bad advice such as the below, and question; Am I being guided through the process properly?
- ‘No need to worry about grid if you are going to use all your solar energy on site’ – Wrong, you are still connecting to the grid.
- ‘G100 export limitation will avoid the need for an application as you won’t export back to the grid’ – Wrong, export limitation devices can still have an influence on the grid and require prior applications.
- ‘Installing a battery will remove the need for a grid application’ – Batteries have the ability to store solar energy and also discharge back to the grid. The correct application is still required.
Grid applications are more than just a paperwork exercise and are integral in making the management of the network safe and efficient, which benefits us all. As part of the process several supporting documents are required to be submitted, many of which require solid technical input relating to the design of the proposed sustainable energy systems.
The risks of not getting it right include, significant project delays, unexpected costs, and in some cases having your solar and storage system disconnected, leaving you with a stranded asset and wasted investment.
It is the property owner who is ultimately liable if the incorrect process is followed.
It’s vital to choose the right partner.
RI Cruden are a reliable and knowledgeable partner for clients seeking to develop on-site renewable energy systems. We will provide clarity and guidance throughout the entire process from initial planning to project completion.
